THE GOOD SCREAM guides healing by eliciting and validating healthy expression of need for love, pain, fear, anger and joy (love). Initial injury to the child's wholeness is partly through repression or distortion of these feelings. Repair of emotional communication offers the most direct restoration of wholeness.
THE GOOD SCREAM is the only book to help a psychiatrist, clinical psychologist, social worker, or student in these disciplines in accessing the earliest emotions and the residues of harmful parenting. Repair of the Self is generally rapid and deep. It is also completely safe when carried out in the warm, protective environment emphasized in THE GOOD SCREAM. These methods are applicable to all neuroses and character disorders. They are not useful for psychotics, although occasionally a withdrawn (schizoid) patient erroneously diagnosed as "schizophrenic" is rapidly brought back to full vitality.
The gateway to the methods of THE GOOD SCREAM is often cognitive, behavioral, or suggestive (light hypnosis), as fully explained. Psychoanalysis is respected, for which note the commendation of a Clinical Assistant Professor of Psychiatry at Yale School of Medicine on the back cover. A brief history of the methods is given in Appendix B.
The ambience and methods developed in THE GOOD SCREAM cannot and must not be confused with those of books collectively described as "about scream therapy." The authors of those books for diverse reasons did not want to teach what they were doing, which was sometimes good, sometimes useless, and not infrequently harmful. A great potential for psychotherapy was largely dissipated as well as a means of understanding core features of human nature.
THE GOOD SCREAM guides a professional in undertaking these powerful methods or using them to intensify his own approach.

The Good Scream heals early wounds / frees and strengthens the self edition by Nolan Saltzman PhD Health Fitness Dieting eBooks

This is terrific book for both Professionals as well as the layperson. I read it because, by education, I'm a psychologist although I don't currently practice. But I've had lots of personal experiences with a variety of Psychotherapy modalities and have found that when the right kind of Vocal Expression is incorporated into any type of therapy, it is far more effective!

The Good Scream is a big read! But a very EASY READ because the Chapters are well ordered and really explanatory. So you can take your time and enjoy it. I found myself making notes in the margins because there were issues covered that I thought were extremely important and wanted to go back to them.

One of the key points Dr. Saltzman makes here is the critical importance of parental bonding with a child at an early age to achieve emotional and mental health for that child. This very strongly resonated with me as someone who came from dysfunctional and absent parents. (They should have read this book!)

I would even recommend this for parents with infants who are striving for their children to grow up with a healthy emotional outlook. (Although I suspect the author might disagree with me on this point since it's really not written as a parental guide.) But nevertheless...

I particularly enjoyed Chapter 2 in Part I on Honesty. There was so much information many of us tend to forget, about how to be honest, and the importance of REAL honesty in a variety of life's situations. It's a wake-up call, a refresher course on things we should practice everyday!

I wish I had had this book as a College Student. It would have taught me a great deal which I ultimately had to learn "on the job" and in my life experiences.

I would also highly recommend this book for all students who are studying, or plan to study Psychology or Psychiatry, regardless of their specialty. It's a perfect Guide to this unique and fascinating modality in Psychotherapy.

In my opinion, this is a therapy, as it is Guided in this book, that can also be practiced with another like-minded person. Many people don't have the opportunity to seek help with a professional therapist. But they wish they could. Here's a chance: You don't absolutely need a practiced Professional in this method, as long as you read The Good Scream in its entirety! Buy it, find a friend or relative you trust, read it individually, and start this Psychotherapy together, as a team! You won't be sorry.

I think it's a great book for everyone interested in how the mind works.

It was a long read... but I loved it!

The Good Scream heals early wounds / frees and strengthens the self edition by Nolan Saltzman PhD Health Fitness Dieting eBooks Reviews

I've never read anything that explains psychology so clearly and passionately. I went in expecting a self-help book, but instead I found an amazing explanation of the theory and practice of psychology. It's not just the steps, but an explanation of why it works, starting from the evolutionary history of our emotions up to our modern understanding of neurology. I trust this book, and cannot recommend it highly enough.
Book is clearly written with a well articulated model of behavior. The author uniquely blends ideas about our emotions and their evolutionary rationale. This reader had to pause often to process the many insights; however, the author's writing style makes it easy and enticing to reengage. It was hard to put down. The book is highly recommended for those who simply want a better understanding of the human condition and for those who want to help others get to a more natural, clear, and happier emotional state.
This book is fascinating! Dr. Saltzman explains how to repair self-defeating thoughts and feelings and behaviors. He believes that everybody's therapy should involve healthy "climactic" screaming to express the basic emotions; love (joy) or the need for love (pain), fear or anger, in supportive sessions. It seems to me that his approach supplies something missing in therapies that just work on habits of thought and action. "The Good Scream" goes deeper into the emotions than anything I've read.
Scream?
Screaming can help? Well, maybe it can, at least it helped me.

When I was living in NJ in the late 1980s I read a letter-to-the-editor in the New York Times by Nolan Saltzman, PhD. I looked up his institute, Biopsychotherapy Institute, called and set-up an appointment. He asked me where I lived and I said New Jersey, to which he responded, 'You need to scream.' )

A week later I was in his office (this is the truth now) and after a brief introduction he got me 'worked-up' and then encouraged me to scream. And I did. Well, not right away 'cause I was a bit embarrassed but I decided to go for it and screamed and then screamed some more (I figured I'd go along; after all, babies scream and if it's good enough for them and good enough for this PhD then it should be good enough for moi).

Anyway, back out on the pavement, I wandered back to the bus station to return to NJ. I felt a mix of crying, feeling high, relaxed, relieved and 'unwound.' I made more appointments and meanwhile began to do some 'loud vocalizations' in my bedroom closet with a pillow over my mouth I felt better and was starting to feel better more of the time!?

Recently I'd been thinking about that period of my life and decided to punch Saltzman's name into just to see if he'd written anything. Lo and behold this book came up. My goodness, nostalgia rippled through my vocal cords. I bought it and was seriously surprised. It is a good, cogent, pleasing and potent introduction to psychotherapy (Janov would even be proud).

This book, at least for me, seems to sum-up much of what this caring and generous therapist learned during his long clinical career. I enjoy history and contained within are historical aspects, too. Important to know history, right? 'If you don't learn your history,' our teachers admonished, 'it will return to haunt you!?'

THANK YOU Nolan. Not only for this important book, but for your compassionate hour sessions which oft turned into one and a half or two (and you rarely if ever charged me extra).

Reader, if screaming is good enough for babies then it's good enough for you (me, us)! They're the ones really in touch!
